About the Organisation

We are a collective of lawyers, researchers, social workers, and community engagement fellows. We believe that the fundamental rights in Part III of the Indian Constitution shouldn’t remain a promise on paper but rather a lived reality for everyone, every single day. 

Our core work is to uphold the rights guaranteed by the Constitution and address gender-based violence and violence against marginalized communities. Our aim is to empower them to actively participate in building an inclusive and accessible justice system.

We do this through –

  • Providing legal aid; 

  • Conducting legal awareness & capacity-building trainings for stakeholders;

  • Conducting research, including participatory research with community stakeholders;

  • Strengthening community ecosystems by nurturing the leadership of women and youth from marginalized communities through community resource centres. 

We are based in Delhi and Bihar, and we work closely with community-based organisations in Uttar Pradesh.

About the Role

In Delhi, our litigation work extends across the district courts, Delhi High Court, and Supreme Court of India. We provide quality legal representation to survivors of gender-based and other forms of identity-based violence.  The Associate will be part of a young, interdisciplinary litigation team. While litigation and legal aid will be the core of the position, the role offers an opportunity to understand the social context of cases and work alongside communities, social workers, and researchers.

The role will involve:

  • Representing survivors of gender-based and other forms of identity-based violence and discrimination before the district courts, Delhi High Court and Supreme Court, as appropriate.

  • Handling matters end-to-end from client intake to legal research, drafting, preparation for hearings and court appearances, including petitions, applications, and other legal documents, and/or briefing senior advocates

  • Strategic litigation, advocacy and action-research on issues of systemic gaps 

  • Participation in community work, training for paralegals and other initiatives of the organization to ensure holistic support for survivors of violence to ensure cohesive and holistic support for survivors of violence. 

  • Working directly with survivors and affected communities to understand their experiences and the social context of cases and to develop responsive legal strategies.

  • Coordinating with community-based organisations to facilitate holistic support for survivors/victims and providing legal aid, advice and training where required.

  • Working with Part III’s research, community engagement and other teams to build cohesive strategies connecting litigation, research, advocacy and training.

  • Undertaking field visits within and outside Delhi for casework, community meetings, training and documentation, as required.


Desired qualifications 

  • Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Law (B.A. LLB.) and enrollment in any State Bar Council with a minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience (Candidates with experience in criminal litigation will be given preference);

  • Interest in issues of human rights and social justice, as well as in community engagement and developing a trauma-informed approach to representing survivors of identity-based violence; 

  • Sound knowledge of and interest in constitutional law, international human rights law, as well as domestic criminal law, family law, and other important statutes relevant to the field of human rights;

  • Experience in legal drafting, court hearings, arguments, client-counsel meetings and briefing of senior advocates;

  • Ability to use Indian legal research databases such as SCC and Manupatra;

  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills in English and Hindi;

  • Good organizational skills and willingness to do detail-oriented work.

Terms

  • Location: Chittaranjan Park, New Delhi

  • Nature of engagement: Full-time

  • Remuneration: ₹3.6 to ₹6.0 lakhs per annum, depending on experience
