Cross-learning workshop on  the navigating the criminal justice system

DDJC and Part III work with victims and survivors of identity-based violence through documentation and litigation support in individual cases as well as through evidence building for interventions aimed at systemic changes. To further their common vision to strengthen research and intervention in cases of caste-based violence, the organisations decided to conduct a 1 day cross-learning workshop where by Part III would understand challenges faced by survivors of caste-based violence through DDJC’s ground level presence in Uttar Pradesh and experience of working on different cases of atrocities in Bundelkhand, and DDJC could discuss with Part III possible legal strategies that can be adopted when facing common roadblocks in litigation. The organisations also discussed their approach to research on these issues, including implementation of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

The workshop discussed issues regarding inadequate police investigation and the possible legal interventions to address the same, delay in or failure of district administration to provide compensation in cases of caste atrocities, lack of access to a lawyer and the difference between a public prosecutor, a legal aid lawyer and a private lawyer.
