Author: Part III Team
As part of our ongoing efforts to make legal knowledge and rights-based information easy to understand and accessible, our team has developed a new training material – “Mera Adhikaar”, an easy-to-read resource to understand and navigate the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
This booklet is guided by the insights gained from the capacity-building trainings we undertake. It is available in Hindi as our work is primarily based in Hindi-speaking states – Bihar, Delhi, and UP.
What does the booklet cover?
- Strategies for dealing with gaps in implementation, such as what to do if police refuse to register an FIR or delay the investigation.
- A simple and clear overview of the SC/ST (PoA) Act, 1989
- What includes an atrocity under this law
- Timelines for key legal procedures
- The rights of victims, survivors, and witnesses
- Information on relief and compensation, including eligibility, the process for claiming, the compensation amount, and the official timeline for disbursal.
- Step-by-step guide to navigating legal processes, such as filing an FIR, securing compensation, and following up through courts.
- Monitoring and accountability mechanisms, such as vigilance and monitoring committees, and the roles of district officials.
This material has been developed as a tool to support community members, grassroots trainers, community educators, legal awareness facilitators, and youth leaders in building awareness around legal protections under the SC/ST (PoA) Act.
