One-Day Training of DDJC’s Paralegal Volunteers on the SC/ST (PoA) Act

On 24th July 2025, Part III was invited by Dalit Dignity and Justice Center (DDJC) to facilitate a session on the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, with their team of 35 youth paralegal volunteers and staff in Orai, Uttar Pradesh.

This training, being participatory in its approach, we collectively built our understanding of gender – a social construct, Patriarchy, and caste; How systems of caste and gender interact with each other, dictating our day-to-day access to justice, dignity, knowledge, opportunities, etc.

We then went on to understanding how law can be one of the empowering tools to access justice and a life of dignity. With this intent, we conducted training on the SC/ST (PoA) Act 1989 and the Domestic Violence Act, 2005.

In this training, we used various facilitation methods, including an open-book quiz on the SC/ST (PoA) Act (using our easy-to-use training material ‘Mera Adhikaar‘), a case analysis exercise linking law to real-life challenges, and a Theatre of the Oppressed session exploring caste, gender, and power. A special address by a women’s rights advocate deepened conversations around justice and accountability for Dalit women.
